The inlingua language levels

in accordance with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR)

Common European Framework of Reference for Languages

All inlingua programmes are based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), a standardised framework applicable across Europe. It is designed to help create greater consistency and transparency in foreign language learning amongst European Member States. The CEF therefore defines six different proficiency levels (A1, A2, B1, B2, C1 and C2) in order to make the various European language certificates comparable with one another and to establish a standard for the consistent assessment of language skills among non-native speakers:

Language levels – what can I do at each stage?

This overview provides the answers. Here you will find a detailed description of the individual language proficiency levels.

Level A1 – First Steps

You can understand and use familiar, everyday phrases and very simple sentences aimed at meeting specific needs. You can also express basic information (such as introducing yourself, talking about your hobbies, work, where you live, etc.).

Level A2 – Communicating

You can ask and answer short questions in everyday business situations, make simple statements and cope with situations whilst travelling. You can understand slow, clear speech, including on the telephone. You can read simple texts, signs and instructions.

Level B1 – Active participation

In your field of work, you represent your company in international dealings. You communicate effectively and are able to make nuanced statements. You are able to follow conversations and telephone calls with increasing confidence. You understand standard business correspondence, reports and minutes, and can draft simple business texts and minutes of meetings.

Level B2 – Getting involved

You are able to convincingly demonstrate your professional expertise in the foreign language. You are able to work with project participants in their native language and can deliver impromptu short presentations. You can follow negotiations and presentations and are confident even during technically complex telephone conversations. You can read and understand challenging newspaper articles, specialist journals and annual reports.

Level C1 – Managing

Are you impressed by our trainers and keen to carry on straight away? No problem – we’ll discuss the next available start date and build on your success.

Level C2 – Acting with confidence

You communicate in the foreign language as naturally as you do in your mother tongue. You have a firm grasp of the linguistic nuances and participate confidently and actively in all business situations. You also feel completely at ease on the telephone. You read and understand any written text with ease.
